Having a missing tooth can affect self-esteem and can lead to problems such as a bad bite and gum disease.

Dental bridges offer an affordable and secure solution to a gap in your smile.

Made from porcelain and metals, bridges are cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the gap, which serve as anchors for the bridge. In order for a bridge to be fitted properly, these teeth are reduced in size. The crowns that fit over the treated teeth are made to match, so the results blend perfectly.

Why have a bridge?

Having a bridge instead of a denture saves on having to wear a denture plate, which could be off-putting. Bridges are secure, whereas dentures are removable and require daily maintenance.

It’s important to fill in any gaps in your smile, not just for aesthetic purposes, but because it leaves your gum vulnerable. Without a tooth in that gap, the teeth on either side will naturally shift, becoming out of position and can affect your bite. This could lead to unwanted tooth wear and jaw pain.

What is involved in having a bridge made and fitted?

We first carry out an oral health check to ensure that the teeth supporting the bridge are perfectly healthy. We then remove a layer of enamel from the teeth so there is plenty of room to accommodate the bridge.

An impression is then made to provide a precise mould for the new bridge, which will also be matched to the colour of your existing teeth so it blends in perfectly. We’ll provide you with a temporary bridge that will be fitted while the new bridge is being made.

When we get your bridge from the lab, we arrange for the fitting and make sure that you are happy with how it looks and feels. The bridge is fixed in place with dental cement.

Looking after your bridge

Once your new bridge has been fitted, it should last for many years without any problems as long as you take good care of it, including daily cleaning to prevent problems such as gum disease and decay.
