What is the treatment for children with a TMJ disorder?

30th June 2018

blog inner thumb : The Edge dental

Whilst not common, children can develop a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder which means a malfunction in the jaw joint or muscles. This can cause pain in the teeth and your child should see a dentist as soon as possible.

If diagnosed as TMJ disorder, courses of action are:
– A special TMJ device known as a TMJ splint or mouthguard
– Specialist orthodontal treatment
– Surgery in special cases

” Surgery is typically only considered as a last resort but may be needed if your child has a severe bite problem or a jaw injury.”
There is more information on TMJ, its causes, symptoms, and treatments in this article https://yourdentalhealthresource.com/tmj-treatment-options-for-children/
