The most common type of restorative treatment, fillings are used to repair teeth as a result of decay or other damage.

Many people in the UK have had a tooth filled at some point. Fillings are an essential treatment for rebuilding teeth and protecting the sensitive and vulnerable inner structure of the tooth.

What are White Fillings?

At The Edge Dental, metal fillings are a thing of the past, and we use a material called dental composite to create natural-looking white fillings. Composite is a special resin that consists of plastic and glass. It is built onto the tooth in layers, building up the bite structure of the tooth to create a very natural-looking result. The composite is colour-matched to blend in perfectly with the tooth. As the composite is added directly to the tooth, there’s no need to remove any layer of healthy tooth to accommodate the filling.

Fillings FAQs

What does having a Filling involve?

Your dentist will tell you if your tooth needs to have a filling. The most common reason for a filling is dental decay. If this is the case, first the decayed part of the tooth is removed, leaving the healthy part of the tooth behind.

The tooth is prepared with a special gel that creates a rough surface for the filling to bond to. This is cleaned away and dried.

The filling itself is layered onto the tooth, using visible blue light to harden the resin as it is applied. White fillings take a well-practised hand to rebuild a tooth to create a natural-looking restoration. Once finished, the filled tooth is cleaned and polished.

How to Look after your filled tooth

While dental composite is resistant to dental decay, the natural tooth supporting the filling is not. Your routine dental hygiene regime will protect your teeth from further decay, as well as keep your filling lasting for as long as possible. Composite is not as strong as enamel, so take care and avoid biting on very hard foods.
