We recommend dental check-ups at least every six months for children, and the first visit should be as soon as you notice their first tooth. This early visit is due to the many changes that happen in young mouths during childhood.
Looking after your child’s dental health is a team job. While you run the scenes at home with your kids’ daily brushing and interdental cleaning, we, as your family dentist, will be keeping an eye on their teeth and gums, giving as much advice for homecare as we can. From looking after baby teeth when they first start to grow as infants to giving adult teeth the best chance at a long life. Your child’s dental care spans throughout their childhood and continues as an adult.
What happens during a child’s examination?
The main part of your child’s check-up is the examination. We have a good look over the teeth and gums, making sure there are no issues. We also check the bite and make sure that adult teeth are growing properly. We keep an eye on any misalignment, as teeth can have a habit of growing out of position. If possible, we may need to carry out a check for any future orthodontic needs.
We help put into practice important cleaning tips, such as how to brush properly and what foods to eat in moderation to avoid cavities. We can also provide preventative treatments to give teeth a helping hand, such as fissure sealants and fluoride varnishes.
