If plaque builds up on your teeth it can irritate the gums, resulting in a condition called gingivitis:

  • Signs of gingivitis include gums becoming red and puffy, whereas healthy gums are pink and firm.
  • Some people are more prone to gingivitis such as those with crooked teeth, smokers and those whose parents have gingivitis.
  • Plaque buildup can be prevented by brushing teeth and flossing daily as well as visiting the dentist regularly for deep cleanings.

Although gingivitis isn’t technically gum disease, it can lead to full-blown gum disease if left untreated.
