Dental implants are a fantastic way to help restore your smile. They are often cited as being one of the most effective ways to fill in the gaps left by one or more missing teeth. This is because they offer exceptionally durable support for natural-looking replacement teeth.

Dental implants are normally made from tough titanium. Titanium is used as it is well-tolerated by the body. The implant acts as a substitute tooth root as it essentially fuses with your jawbone, providing a firm foundation for a brand-new tooth.

The implant will be carefully placed in your jaw, using a local anaesthetic. The gum is stitched up so it will heal over the implant. Once the implant and the jawbone have fused, a false tooth is attached to the implant in the form of a crown, bridge, or denture. There are many benefits to getting dental implants, which we will explore further.

Dental implants – the benefits

  • Closest replacement to a lost natural tooth.
  • They are extremely stable and durable.
  • Can be placed independently from the rest of the teeth, so can preserve the health of the remaining teeth.
  • No messy adhesives, gum irritation or, ‘teeth popping out’ incidents, which can be associated with dentures.
  • Speaking and eating will become easier.
  • They can offer a boost to your self-esteem.
  • They can last for many years if looked after properly.

Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

If you have missing teeth, either through decay, gum disease or injury, and you are looking for a more permanent alternative to dentures then dental implants could be suitable for you. However, there are a few factors that will affect whether you can have implants or not.

It’s important to realise that having dental implants requires surgery, and the process of ‘osseointegration’ (when the titanium posts bond with the bone) takes several months. Also, for the procedure to be successful, you will need healthy gums, free from any signs of periodontal disease.

You will also need sufficient bone density so the implants can be placed successfully. We can assess your bone volume and if you don’t have quite enough bone, then don’t despair, you could still have implants by undergoing a bone grafting procedure.

Looking after your dental implants

In a similar way to natural teeth, your dental implants will last longer if you look after them by keeping up with a regular and thorough cleaning regime. The replacement teeth are resistant to bacteria, but the surrounding gum and bone are not. If you keep your mouth bacteria-free your implants will last longer and potentially last as long as your natural teeth.
